从影30多年，发哥一直低调的进行着自己的摄影创作，直到他姐姐将他的三幅摄影作品送去参赛并获得了三等奖后，发哥热衷摄影的事才被公众所知。
1997年，在迎接香港回归的一次大型影展上，发哥的姐姐周聪玲偷偷用化名拿了他拍的三张照片来参展，结果其中一幅以西红柿为全景的照片，夺得了三等奖。从演员到摄影师，在好莱坞发展顺利的周润发，曾经在2004年参与过摄影联展。当时他提供了6幅照片，其中包括关帝像及渔村等。据玲姐透露，发哥最爱的是《渔村》那幅。她说：“平时拍完的黑白照片，全部发哥自己冲印，冲印药水都是由美国订回来的，香港都买不到。”
发哥是绝对的摄影发烧友，不仅走到哪里都自带摄影器材，而且所拍照片大都自己亲手冲洗。他说，拍了30多年的电影，除了老婆之外，和摄影机的关系最为亲密。香港知名摄影师夏永康说，要拍风景，一般的摄影师都比不上发哥，香港拍风景最好的人一定是发哥。
即兴且率性的摄影
发嫂说发哥对摄影的态度，绝对是即兴而且率性的。她曾替发哥当了两次模特儿，都是没有什么特别主题的自然家居生活照。 她还透露，发哥有一次甚至连她敷面膜也拍！“他忽然想拍我敷面膜的样子，就叫我敷起来给他拍，我也觉得很过瘾，就照他意思做了。”她略带腼腆地继续说：“这是情趣嘛！都老夫老妻了，现在的情趣反而更多。”
影、冲、放是摄影三部曲。影包括相机的使用和认识，取景，采光，正确曝光，景深与快门的关系等等。在户外可以拍摄大自然的景物，也可以在室内摆布拍摄，各适其式。冲是配合药剂，温度和时间把负片得到适当的反差和粒子。而放则是把拍摄的影像成为照片；通过暗房的技巧，配纸和配药，相纸在盆中由浅至深逐渐显影而至成为一帧照片。由於喜爱黑白摄影，从拍摄到完成一帧照片都亲手处理，其中的过程实在乐趣无穷。除了上述三部曲外，还有更重要的是多影，多做，多想和多看有关的展览。
进暗房冲印作品的发哥经常会忘记时间，“在暗房没日没夜待24小时都没感觉，老婆只好敲敲门看老公还在不在。”热爱黑白摄影的发哥从拍摄到完全每一帧相片都亲手处理，专门从美国订购冲印药水，静静等待黑白影像逐渐浮现，这过程中的无穷乐趣，是他人无法知晓的喜悦收获吧。
摄影是一件逍遥的事
身为国际巨星的周润发，经常有机会在世界各地拍电影，这也方便了他摄影。“我在香港以外的地方从来没有专门去采风拍摄过，经常是拍电影的时候顺便拍摄。”即使这两件事情经常是同一时间完成，但摄影与演戏对于发哥来说，是完全不同的摄影更多是内心私密的享受，“我去演戏拍电影的时候，经纪人、助理前呼后拥，看起来很风光。而背着大画幅相机去为拍摄的时候经常累得像狗一样，为什么这么辛苦还要去拍摄？这种乐趣真的是完全不同的。拍电影是为了养家糊口，拍照片才是真正开心，自己独享的。”
在发哥看来，拍照是最美好的事情，因为只有空闲时间才能拿着相机去拍照，这件事情本身就逍遥得不得了，“为了拍照你可以去周游列国，而且都是在最美的时刻按下快门，别人看到的只是照片的定格，你却享受到了全部的过程。”
